If you’ve ever wondered how to improve embroidery skills fast… I’m about to share something I believe down to my core!
And I don’t mean to be dramatic (okay maybe a little 🤭), but this truly is the fastest route to getting better at hand embroidery, and it’s something soooo many stitchers overlook.
Get really, really good at the basics.
Start simple. Start small. And make small, consistent improvements every time you stitch!
That’s it. That’s the secret.
Let’s talk about why consistent embroidery practice changes everything 👇🏼
Why Consistent Embroidery Practice Works (It’s Basically Science 🤓)
There’s a well-known idea called the 100-Hour Rule that states that 100 hours of practice at something will make you better at that thing than 95% of the population.
Before we break down the math - can we just take a minute to realise how incredibly powerful that is?! To be better than 95% of the population on that specific task!
And sure, 100 hours probably sounds like a lot, right? Well, it kinda is.. but when you break that down over an entire year? It works out at just 18 minutes a day.
So yep, if you can dedicate an average of just 15–20 minutes of stitching a day for a year, you will be better at embroidery than 95% of the population!
That’s it. It's as simple as that. Fifteen minutes!!
You probably spend longer than that scrolling without even realising it 🫠 (no judgement, you don't want to see my screen time most days😅).
When you commit to daily embroidery practice, even when it is just in small chunks like this, your hands + mind build muscle memory. Your stitches become smoother and more polished, your stitch tension and control evens out, and your confidence grows.
Repetition creates refinement in your stitching, and that refinement creates lasting skill!
Start Simple: Master the Basic Embroidery Stitches First
If you want real embroidery improvement, my biggest piece of advice is to resist the urge to jump straight into advanced techniques.
Instead, focus on mastering beginner-friendly embroidery stitches first. Including:
-
Back stitch
-
Satin stitch
-
French knots
-
Lazy daisy
-
Split stitch
When you repeat these foundational stitches consistently, something magical happens 🥹✨. Within a few weeks, your lines look cleaner and neater, your petals and leaves feel more natural, and your satin stitch becomes super smooth instead of lumpy + bumpy 👀
Within a few months? You'll feel confident enough to gift your work to others, you'll be proudly displaying your finished embroideries in your home, and you'll stop calling yourself a 'beginner' or downplaying your skill to your family and friends.
Consistently stitching the beginner embroidery stitches allows them to become totally second nature - and it's only then that you're ready to move on to more advanced stitches + techniques.

Here’s what I’ve seen over and over again in my embroidery membership community, Bloom Embroidery Academy (and honestly, it still blows my mind 🤩).
A stitcher commits to:
-
15 minutes a day
-
Simple patterns
-
Focusing on improving one stitch at a time
And within:
4 weeks:
They’ve mastered the basic embroidery stitches.
3 months:
They’re confidently trying textured techniques and advanced stitches.
6 months:
They no longer call themselves beginners.
1 year:
Some are designing their own patterns.
Some are selling embroidery they've designed themselves.
Some are starting creative side businesses 🥹
All of them are feeling so much more confidence and joy from their creative hobby, that spills out into other areas of their life too!
All from small, consistent embroidery practice.
The Hidden Benefit: Confidence (and a Little Magic 🤎)
And on that topic, here’s something no one talks about enough..
Consistency doesn’t just improve your stitches - it builds confidence + self-belief.
When you show up for yourself daily (even if it is for just 15 minutes), you prove to yourself that you can commit to something mindful and creative. To something that's just for you.
And that confidence spills into everything. Really - not just embroidery practice, but in all aspects of your life!!
It’s honestly exciting. The possibilities + the opportunities that fall into your lap because you've decided to prioritise yourself, your creativity, your self-care, your me-time. It bleeds into all areas of your life, lifting you higher and further away from stress, worry, anxiety and a full cognitive load.
I've noticed this in my own life, but the stories I hear from students who committed to steady embroidery skill development? Nothing short of incredible 🥰
I’ve watched members go from “I can’t even thread a needle” to stitching heirloom-quality florals in under a year! Not because they’re magically talented, but because they were consistent.
How to Build a Simple Embroidery Practice Routine
If you’re wondering how to stay consistent with embroidery, here’s a simple way that you can slowly start to build a habit to keep you consistent:
1. Keep Your Supplies Visible
My partner might disagree on this one (he hates how messy I am!🤣), but if you can keep your embroidery supplies within easy reach, it's so much easier to have a hobby that you can 'pick up and put down'.
If they're out of sight, they're out of mind. If you have to go and grab a step ladder and find the hidden box at the back of a cupboard just to locate your supplies, you're never going to do it!🤭
Keep your hoop and thread somewhere you’ll see them daily. I love to store my 'WIP' (work in progress) projects in a small project bag. This keeps them all together, and then when I feel the creative feeling, I can have a needle in my hand within a minute or two!
2. Choose Simple, Repeatable Patterns
If you can, avoid overwhelming designs. If your current project is super tricky and involves lots of 'thought' to stitch, then without you realising it, it's going to be weighing a burden on your mind.
Your brain will be thinking.. "huh, I could do some embroidery, but that's not going to be an easy + fun task because that pattern is so damn hard!". It creates a psychological barrier, and moves it away from being a fun activity you can do for 5-10 minutes, and closer towards a task that feels too hard.
Focus on simple patterns, clear shapes and embroidery stitches you already know + love!
3. Set a 15-Minute Timer
Maybe this is because I have a toddler, but crikey, timers really, really work for me 🤣
Whether I'm actively trying to form a new habit, or I just need to get a task done that I've been procrastinating on, setting myself a 15 minute timer works wonders for kicking my butt into gear! If you're genuinely struggling to make time for yourself in the day, setting a timer for just 10-15 minutes of stitching is enough to 'just start'.
And who knows, once you've started, you might not want to stop!
There's no pressure to stitch for hours. Just start!
4. Track Your Progress
Take photos of your progress weekly! Yup, this isn't just a tip for the fitness community - it's a tip for any level of transformation that you want to experience. Practice and consistency almost always leads to improvement. But, how would you know you're improving if you don't take photos of your progress along the way? You’ll be shocked at the difference!
But the real truth? Consistency becomes SO much easier when you have structure, guidance, and people cheering you on 🫶🏼

Why Most People Don’t Improve at Embroidery..
Let me call this out as kindly as I possibly can 🤭
Most people, when they want to improve their skills, will do at least one of these things:
-
Start a complex project too soon
-
Get frustrated when they start to struggle
-
Take long breaks
-
Restart from scratch
If that's what you want from your hobby, then there is absolutely no problem with any of the above! But, if you are looking to actively improve your skills, that doesn’t come from occasional bursts of motivation, or diving in at the deep end and wondering why you can't float 🤭.
Improvement at hand embroidery comes from steady, simple repetition.
And honestly? That’s good news! Because it means that you don't need 'more talent', or expensive supplies, or to be naturally arty + creative. You just need gentle consistency - calm, quiet moments where you can dedicate some time to yourself to genuinely get good at something.
Imagine Where You Could Be in One Year 🪡✨
Now let us just imagine for a sec. Because it's fun to think forwards and mentally paint a picture every once in a while! If you decided to consistently to this, for one whole year:
-
15 minutes of stitching a day (on average)
-
Focus on simple, foundational practice (beginner stitches, foundational techniques)
-
Gradual technique upgrades (only moving on when you're truly ready to!)
You could:
-
Confidently stitch advanced embroidery techniques in no time at all
-
Create meaningful handmade gifts
-
Display your work proudly
-
Even start a small embroidery business (yes, really 😘)
Small daily habits change the direction and course of your life. It might sound dramatic, but it quite literally opens doors you didn’t even know existed.
And that? Is exciting 🥹
I had absolutely no idea that I would start an embroidery business. I was a law student, then a paralegal - an office girly ready to climb the corporate ladder as a lawyer. Until, that is, I dedicated consistent time to a brand new hobby that gave me peace.
And now? I get the pleasure of calling hand embroidery my job. My business, my livelihood, my life! All because of those small 15 minute moments.
