Why Stitch Samplers Are a Great Way to Start Learning Embroidery

Some of my favourite embroidery projects involve multiple stitches, colours and even - at times - fabrics.

So naturally, when I sit down to create designs for the Mindful Mantra Embroidery shop and students inside the Bloom Embroidery Academy, I like them to feature plenty of variety - both to further progress your embroidery skills, and to create something beautiful.

Which is also true of my stitch samplers…

What Are Stitch Samplers?

Stitch samplers are patterns that are specially designed to teach you a variety of different embroidery stitches in one place.

And while it’s possible to simply practice various stitches on your fabric, stitch samplers are typically aesthetic designs that feature patterns consisting of multiple different stitches.

Why Stitch Samplers Are A Great Way To Learn Embroidery

I truly believe working your way through stitch samplers is one of the best ways to improve your embroidery skills - but why should you be introducing samples into your stitching practice?

  1. You can learn lots of stitches

Rather than working your way through a pattern that features just a small selection of stitches, embroidery stitch samplers are there for you to try out a number of stitches in one design.

  1. They’re ‘prettier’ than usual samplers out there

It’s true - because of the variety of stitches featured in one design, the patterns are typically more interesting and intricate, resulting in a stunning finished product.

  1. They can become a ‘reference point’ when you’re finished stitching

Once your stitch sampler is complete, you can refer back to it when working on other projects to remind yourself what certain stitches look like.

EMBROIDERY KIT & BEGINNER COURSE

Embroidery Stitch Samplers vs Beginner Embroidery Patterns

While beginner embroidery patterns are a wonderful way to create a finished piece, embroidery stitch samplers are specifically designed to help you learn and practise a variety of stitches in one project. Traditional beginner patterns often focus more on the final design, whereas stitch samplers encourage you to experiment with techniques like satin stitch, chain stitch and French knots as you go.

If you’re completely new to embroidery, a stitch sampler can be a great starting point because it helps build confidence and stitch memory before moving on to more detailed embroidery patterns. Once you’ve practised the basics, beginner patterns can feel much less intimidating and far more enjoyable to complete.
